Italy on trend

Birks continue to rule the streets this year – they’re comfortable, come in a million styles/colors and have great soles for cobblestone streets. Bonus, can I mention how happy I am to not see friggin’ Crocs?

Exposed midriffs are everywhere. I’ve witnessed this trend at least 3x in my life and can assure you, it is a style that has never called my name. You uber confident girls, go on with yourselves. Brava!

Matching sets – I’m going to be honest here…tread carefully when dipping in to this trend. When done well, it can be adorable. When done wrong, you’ll look like that family (father + 2 sons) I observed who clearly had been dressed by the wife/mother. Garanimals aren’t a thing any longer for a reason, people.

Maxi dresses – In the right fabric (poplin or linen) this style can be surprisingly effortless and comfortable. I brought one along with me and it has been the perfect foil for jewelry and a wrap for cooler nights.*

Cut off shorts – I have seen this perennial fashion in every shade of denim and in lengths between to the knee and plain old scandalous. I left mine at home this year because the ass needs to be patched (on the other cheek this time) and I miss their easy comfort.

Hugo spritzes – This is my new apertivo favorite! Swap out your Aperol or Campari for St. Germain and sub some fresh mint for an orange slice and you’ve got an incredibly delicious and refreshing late afternoon pick me up. Plan to make these in Wellfleet next month for sure.

Hair styles here have been interesting with the man bun, often with shaved sides, observed with a frequency that rivals the streets of Brooklyn. Cornrow braids also seem to be a thing, cultural appropriation be damned.

Halter tops seem to be having a moment and I must say, this fashion is one of my favorites. There’s something about exposed shoulders that I find really appealing. It’s just sexy as hell, don’t you think?

While I’m not rocking a single one of these trends (other than my Mother’s Day Birks from my oldest son), I am really proud of my packing prowess. I’m 15 days into my trip and have worn every single item at least once – success!

As for the photo of Sophia Loren, some things are absolutely timeless. She’s forever on trend in my mind.

*There have been exactly two cool nights, both in Matera, when the temperature dipped below 70° at night.
