Nurturing eagles as democracy dies

In “my” library at school, which was completely renovated recently, we have a banging a/v system, complete with Bose speakers. Often we’ll project a scene onto the big screen, something inspiring or designed to transport viewers from the greyness of winter in upstate New York. Cozy fireplaces and spring gardens can literally warm the soul, you know?

This week we’ve been peeping on a pair of nesting bald eagles in California and their (so far!) two hatched eaglets. The webcam footage has absolutely captivated the attention of everyone who has come into the LMC and observed the new parents and the care they are providing together to their offspring.

It’s beautiful and hopeful and inspiring

Don’t we all need that – especially now?

Thursday, though, was challenging. Watching the snow pile up and the wind sway the nest in its branches was difficult to witness. Seeing that mama bird rock atop her hatchlings, as she became buried in snow, giving them everything she had and knowing that it just might not be enough, caused me to feel anxious.

I realized that I’m emotionally invested in these magnificent birds.

I am desperate for them to survive.

As the country in which I was born becomes an increasingly foreign place, these eagles are embodying the spirit of a nation that no longer (or perhaps never had) exists.

The eagle pair and their shared impulse to care for the eaglets, is so refreshingly pure that it makes me a little teary. They are committed, resourceful and patient, following their instincts to provide for the next generation of their species.

Witnessing the behavior of these birds, in their home high in the mountains, has provided an excellent distraction from the ugliness that is radiating from the highest office in the land.

Check out the live feed. Looks like eaglet number three just might be making their debut today.

  1. We have been watching for a while now. Great tv.

Do read Frank S. Robinson’s blog? He is spot on about our vile POTUS.
