Streaming: Kiss, Marry, Kill

I was reflecting on my recent screen consumption and spent a little time considering my feelings and thoughts about 3 different stories I had streamed. Two were series in their current seasons, one was a featured film recently available on HBO MAX, the streaming network with the greatest identity crisis I’ve ever witnessed.

What are we calling it today? MAX? HBO? HBO MAX??

As I was bouncing the storylines, characters, costumes, performances, and soundtracks around in my head, that old game, F*ck, Marry, Kill came to mind and it only seems natural to present my opinion of The Bear (S4) , And Just Like That (S3) and Sinners (2025) in a similar fashion.

So, let’s start with the kissing…

For me, this is The Bear – and that’s mainly because of the clarity in Carmy’s turquoise eyes. Through the seasons, I’ve struggled with some of the episodes, but I also believe that the Forks episode was one of the finest crafted episodes of any series I’ve ever watched.

This season, though, feels particularly weak and I’ve only seen a glimmer (in the wedding episode) of the quality that was present in previous seasons. The plot? I’m not really feeling it. I want more restaurant action, less Syd’s indecisiveness. I’m tired of the yelling at one another for far too long.

It feels like work to watch it.

*Closed mouth kiss*.

The object of future matrimony would, hands down, be Sinners. It’s been 4 days and I can’t stop thinking about it. Wow. The performances, plot, music, visuals, costumes…everything was in a different universe than anything else I’ve seen in recent memory.

This movie was remarkable and has promoted a previously never imagined interest in streaming Black Panther. Although I’ve sworn off marriage, (and murdering, obvs.) I’d be tempted to reconsider when it comes to Sinners. This film deserves all the awards.

*Elopement in Vegas -STAT*.

I don’t really consider myself at a killer at heart, but I’ve observed that there’s an awful lot of hate watching going on when it comes to the new season of And Just Like That. I’m not doing that, per se, but I do worry that I might be killing more brain cells watching the “new” Sex and the City revisit than if I had huffed a balloon of nitrous at a Dead show.*

It’s out of touch in a way that isn’t aspirational, but instead just gauche. I’m just not invested in the characters on any level anymore. At this point, I watch purely for the fashions and familiar city sights. If I must kill, and suicide isn’t an option !joking!, I’ll make the death as painless as possible.

*Quick, clean death*.

How about you? What have you seen recently? What are your current viewing Kiss, Marry, Kills?

*something I’ve never done, nor recommend

    1. Thanks for the link, Roger. I really appreciated your perspective and agree that Sinners was terrific. I also did not see Buddy Guy coming and loved the epilogue. I’ll be thinking about this film for a long time. A friend shared the two links below which talk about some of the history and symbolism included in the movie. I’ll be working through them and may rewatch Sinners with more open eyes.
