Generally, I’m not really a reality tv person. Maybe it was the Kardashians that killed that genre for me. I remember being subjected to their toxic family dynamic, in a nail salon that I used to frequent, and wondering who in the world would want to sit around watching family members yell at one another as they highlight their hyper consumer and uber privileged lifestyles?
No, thanks. I’ll pass.
The last couple of weeks, though, I’ve been taking in the final season of Queer Eye and I’ve been absolutely charmed by the series. I’ve seen random episodes over the years, but this latest season has captivated me in a new and different way. I’ve been making an effort to pace myself and not binge all the episodes…it’s almost as if I’m micro dosing on the wonderful energy the Fab 5 is bringing into my home.
What can I say? It’s just what I need at this moment in time – it’s kind of reminiscent of the way Schitt’s Creek and Ted Lasso got me through the pandemic. Witnessing Karamo, Tan, Jonathan, Antoni and Jeremiah as they share their insights and talents has given me some semblance of hope at what is a dark time in this country.
Sidebar: I’ve read that there has been some controversy this season and that Fab 5 have fallen out with one another. This May, in fact, be true, but I’d prefer to ignore this gossip at this time. If MAGA fools can suspend reality and choose to believe that DJT is their personal savior intent upon making the world a better place for all, I’m owed this ignorance.
So, what am I enjoying about this show?
The positivity.
The acceptance.
The wisdom.
The humor.
The kindness.
The support.
The community.
The love.
If you’re seeking these important (and currently absent in our federal government) attributes, give the guys of Queer Eye a look. They just might warm your heart at this frigid time of the year.
I watched Queer Eye for the Straight Guy religiously. But I never even saw the new QE. I’m afraid the fractured nature of the relation seems to be accurate, when Kamaro didn’t appear on CBS Mornings a few weeks ago. There’s a Cosmo article about another conflict. But we take what we can from our heroes, I reckon.
