Speaking of books, a couple of years ago Ruta Sepetys, one of the best contemporary historical fiction writers I’ve ever read, published a book about living in Communist Romania. The work, I Must Betray You, described to readers the extreme stress of living under a tyrannical government in a country where citizens are denied everything but fear. The gaslighting they were subjected to, along with constant threats of force and betrayal from those one should be able to look to for guidance and support, made for a most suspenseful read.
You might want to pick that one up, reader friends.
Someone I work with recently offered some suggestions she had gathered from someone she follows on social media, tips relating to preserving one’s access to travel, medical records and financial documents. Update all of it – make sure your passport and driver’s license are current, preferably with numerous years of validity remaining, have hard copies of your Social Security card and medical history on hand and have digital, color backups of everything on a secure device. Preserve banking records and financial statements and document relating to property ownership.
I have friends with daughters who are concerned about access to birth control so they are now stocking up on contraceptives and Plan B pills.
