Let me just start with this undeniable fact: Colin Farrell is hot. I’m talking an absolute smoke show of a man.
Beyond the admiration I hold for Farrell’s physical appearance, though, lies something even deeper – he’s a hell of an actor. The present vehicle for his talent is Sugar, an Apple TV series currently streaming in its second season, and he is fantastic in his starring role as a PI with a very unique origin story.

The genre, in my retired librarian mind, is sci-fi film noir. It’s beautifully shot and visually engrossing with images that demand one’s full attention – a difficult challenge in these ADHD times. Black and whites scenes, clips from old films and musicals and the L.A. skyline, combine to create a rich background from which Farrell’s character, John Sugar, emerges to captivate viewers.
While the plot is engaging, I personally find it to be secondary to mood and vibe. Farrell’s narration and thoughts out loud are what attract and retain my attention. The cast is terrific, with numerous faces familiar from other programs, and the soundtrack is perfectly selected and applied.
Perhaps I’m biased, but the 1966 (whatta year!) Stingray that Sugar tools around in could not suit his character more. She’s a beaut.
This series is the full package presented in ~38 minute bites and I’m going to be rationing myself to make it last. While I don’t watch much television in the summer (World Cup aside – brava, Spain!), this series is one that I’m willing to sit still for, even in July.
