An open letter to Albany County Democrats

Just a quick note here to tell you how wildly out of touch you are with the future of this country, young people, and the direction in which they are prepared to lead.

Sidebar: maybe I should be penning this with a quill and ink on papyrus since those seem to be the tools of the time you are still residing…

Anyway – the article I read in the Sunday, 9/13 edition of the Times Union in which the head of the Albany County Democrats seeks to create distance between the established party and the arm of the organization comprised of young people between the ages of 18-35, was infuriating.

No need to create distance, Jay Jacobs. You’re clearly residing in a different universe than the young people who are active and involved in creating policies and messages to express and support their positions.

I’ll never claim to be an expert in either politics or the current generation in the age range of the Young Democrat Party, but it is clear to me that this demographic is facing challenges, and the world, with a set of priorities that the establishment simply does not seem to be truly concerned.

Young people are entering a world in which they have never been made to feel safe to navigate. Yes, of course, they’ve had their digital leashes and helicopter parents, but have they been provided with a sense of hope for the future?

Do they have any optimism to experience freedom from the seemingly soul crushing debt of college and their own ability to eventually be self supporting and truly independent?

Have their elected representatives fought for sensible gun laws and the guarantee of basic civil rights for all people in this country, including immigrants?

Are elected officials even remotely as concerned with the needs of their constituents as they are with their own grip on their positions of power?

This morning, I received a notification indicating that ICE is again active in the city where I have lived for more than half of my life. Are Albany County Democrats going to the scenes of these kidnappings to stand in opposition to the American Nazis wreaking terror on our streets?

Have the members of this political organization demonstrated their commitment to working their hardest to prevent gun violence and to help to create safe schools and public spaces for all?

And, now, returning to the issue at hand in which Albany County Democrats have chosen to believe, just like MAGA believes what they have been told, that there is no genocide in Gaza – they’re wrong.

Israel, aided by American tax $$ and weaponry, are committing a genocide against Palestinians.

As documented below:

Albany County Democrats need to stop telling young people that what they see with their own eyes doesn’t exist. As the saying goes – stop pissing on my leg and telling me it’s raining. Jay Jacobs, you and the party of which you are the head, are doomed to failure if you continue this assault on the Young Democrat Party.

It’s time for the Albany County Democrat Party instead to direct their attention and efforts to standing up against the MAGA party that is currently creating chaos globally, as well as in our own communities.

Step up or step aside.
