Please stop celebrating consumerism as a holiday

From my social media feeds (primarily FB and Insta), I see that Amazon’s annual gluttony of purchasing, Prime Day, is coming up soon. There are many sites posting suggestions for best deals and lists featuring what to buy where, along with tips on how to manage the purchasing process.

There are many special prices and tremendous deals to be had, apparently. Get your credit card ready and have Alexa lend you a hand. She probably has recommendations for you, too.

Regardless of price, though, how much of that stuff do you truly need?

As I said to a friend recently, I’m in my Divestment Era, not my Acquisitions Era. Maybe you are, also?

I quit Amazon cold turkey in January and other than an occasional Prime Channel envy, I haven’t missed it. Most of the stuff I bought from Amazon over the years, I’ve relearned to shop for locally and I actually enjoy the human contact in the transaction.

I don’t need Amazon.

Billionaires are gross and I do my best to not support them.

Declaring a Day to shop in the middle of July is not a command, it’s social pressure. You’re not obligated to participate in a frenzy of primarily recreational shopping.

Keep your money and tuck it away for now. We’re in perilous waters here in MAGAland. If you’re feeling flush (or think the world is going to end in WWIII soon) spend your money on experiences, not excess. Have a nice dinner, pickup a case of wine or beer from your local, get tickets to a show.

The best bargains on Amazon Prime Day aren’t online and shopping does not make a holiday.

Let’s sit this one out, friends.

  1. We are seniors and not acquiring more stuff. We are thinning out the stuff we have.

Very rare that we order on line unless we can’t get it locally.
