When you wake to a snowy April morning

If you’re anything like me, you’ve had just about enough of this lingering winter. The few days of sunshine and relative warmth, sometimes even occurring concurrently, have been a mean tease, rather than a reliable harbinger of true spring.

I’m over it.

I want to wear sandals and dresses and tops that bare my shoulders. I’m ready for yard work followed by meals on the deck and nights sleeping with the window open so I can hear the sounds of the birds in the early morning.

But, here we are – a wet morning under a sky more grey than blue. What’s a girl to do?

  • Fluff your pillows
  • Pull on that cashmere sweater that you’ve taken to wearing to bed on cold nights.
  • Turn the heating pad on for an hour of gentle warmth on your lower back.
  • Look at the weather forecast – both for home and your next destination. In my case, Dublin.
  • Peruse your personal calendar to confirm that you’ve got at least one out of town adventure planned for each of the next 6 months.
  • Tweak your packing list for Ireland.
  • Browse accommodations for a potential three night stay in Savannah in June.
  • Take the leap and buy a plane ticket to visit friends in late summer in San Francisco.
  • Cuddle the dog.
  • Reflect on how the weather is utterly out of your control, but appreciate that your wardrobe features plenty of items that will keep you warm.
  • Swing your legs out of bed, slide into your slippers and get dressed in jeans, a turtleneck and wool socks.
  • Remind yourself of Hemingway’s wise words –

When spring came, even the false spring, there were no problems except where to be happiest.

Find that place, be it internal or at a distance, and remember that spring will arrive. Eventually.
